Biography
Shameem Jaumdally is a senior scientist at the Centre for Lung Infection and Immunity of the University of Cape Town Lung Institute. His key area of research is tuberculosis transmission and the focus of his work in the past 5 years has been to develop and assess alternative tools to detect and quantify TB infectiousness.
Key Impacts
Bacterial and host determinants of cough aerosol culture-positivity in minimally symptomatic or asymptomatic patients with tuberculosis diagnosed during community-based active case finding
Collectively, these data indicate that a significant proportion of community-based undetected individuals with TB are probably infectious with a high likelihood. Moreover, sputum LAM, sputum 16s RNA, and blood transcriptomic signatures are promising transmission-limiting tools to detect infectious TB in the community.
