Biography

I am a Research Scientist at the University of Washington in Dr. Gerard Cangelosi’s lab. I led the initial validation of oral swabs as an alternative specimen for tuberculosis diagnosis and detection in symptomatic adults. I have since worked to improve and diversify the methodology, train and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, foster collaborations with domestic and international research partners, and share our findings through publications and presentations. Our work on oral swabs has generated global interest, with numerous partners incorporating them into their studies and designing and manufacturing swab-specific testing platforms.

Testing tongue swab samples by Cepheid Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra: Comparison of two protocols applied to samples from people with low-bacillary load TB

This study supports the diluted SR method for testing TS by Xpert Ultra. It is logistically advantageous and has no disadvantages in diagnostic accuracy. When feasible, serial sampling may help boost diagnostic accuracy.
