Key Impacts

Trajectories of lung function in people with and without HIV during and after pulmonary TB treatment

We found differences in lung function at diagnosis and in trajectories of recovery during and after TB treatment by HIV and ART status. Future studies should explore whether this variability reflects differences in the pathophysiology of TB-associated lung damage with HIV coinfection.

Patterns of pulmonary impairment before and after TB treatment

In individuals with newly diagnosed, moderate-to-severe pulmonary TB, a restrictive pattern of pulmonary function was the most common type of impairment. There was only moderate concordance between PFT patterns at TB diagnosis, treatment completion, and 6 months after treatment completion, suggesting significant heterogeneity in the natural history of TB-associated lung injury.
