Trends in drug-resistant TB in the Democratic Republic of Congo: A 6-year retrospective analysis (2018-2023)

MDR-TB remains under-detected in DRC. This is challenged by limited access to molecular diagnostic tools (number of GeneXpert, Truenat), sub-optimal sample transportation system, stockout of medicines and reagents, insecurity issues limiting access to TB services especially in mining areas and in the Eastern part of the country.

The BPaL regimen offers many advantages in terms of treatment duration and compliance. It was well tolerated by patients in the study setting. To be scaled up, considerations should be the training of health professionals in identifying and managing side effects, on early management of patients presenting side effects and availability of drugs for the treatment of side effects.
