Biography

Mavis Namibai is the Community Engagement Lead Peer Counsellor for Burnet Institute in Daru, Papua New Guinea. Mavis has been a peer counsellor since 2021. Mavis’s lived experience of MDR-TB drives her passion for educating her community about TB and supporting them through challenges experienced in TB screening, testing and treatment. Mavis has been strongly involved in the development and implementation of the comprehensive community engagement approach being utilised in the SWEEP-TB community-based screening and treatment program. She tirelessly advocates for the rights of the community, ensuring that screening and testing processes successfully meet the needs of community members.

The multi-faceted community engagement approach has been effective in increasing knowledge of TB disease and infection and understanding of the importance of screening and treatment. The findings provide a roadmap for future interventions including in other settings in PNG.
