Biography
Dr Matthew Saunders is an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Public Health Medicine at City St George’s University of London. His research focusses on characterising the social determinants and consequences of tuberculosis, and co-developing and evaluating novel, equitable, and sustainable strategies to address these challenges, principally in low- and middle-income settings.
Key Impacts

Body mass index and TB risk: An updated systematic literature review and dose-response meta-analysis
Our results highlight the independent importance of nutritional status as a driver of the global tuberculosis epidemic. Social protection and other interventions to improve nutrition should be urgently scaled up as part of a holistic global tuberculosis response.

Climate change and TB: An analytical framework
The available evidence supports the existence of plausible pathways between climate change and tuberculosis, highlighting the need to include tuberculosis in climate risk adaptation and mitigation programmes, and climate-resilient funding and response mechanisms. Further evidence is urgently needed to quantify the effects of climate change on tuberculosis.

Using geolocation data to inform TB active case finding in the Kulob Zero TB project, Tajikistan
Spatial analysis facilitated the identification of TB transmission hotspots in Kulob Districts. This information will be used to optimise targeted, evidence-based TB screening, prevention, and education interventions as part of the Zero TB project.
