Biography

Martha Chipiinduro is a medical laboratory scientist and a PhD student in International Health at the Ludwig Maximillian University, Germany. She has experience in tuberculosis diagnostic research. Her Masters research explored the utility of Xpert MTB/Rif in identifying tuberculosis disease in children using stool samples. Currently, she co-ordinates the tuberculosis laboratory work within the multi-country site ERASE-TB study. Her PhD research is embedded within the ERASE-TB study where she focusses on defining tuberculosis transmission among index-household contact pairs using whole genome sequencing and hopes to propose strategies to combat tuberculosis transmission.

Key Impacts

Strain discordance among household index-secondary patient pairs with tuberculosis disease

Household transmission contributes minimally to the overall TB burden. Clustering of tuberculosis patients within households likely reflects both household transmission and shared risk factors for TB disease. Interventions to interrupt community transmission and for improved social protection in vulnerable households and communities should be prioritised.
