Biography

Lily O'Brien is a Research Assistant at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Lily's work has focused on mathematically modelling tuberculosis (TB) in Brazil, particularly the role of incarceration as a key driver of the epidemic. She contributes to projects evaluating the impact of interventions aimed at reducing TB incidence, prevalence and mortality- with a large portion focused among currently and previously incarcerated populations. Lily's research aims to inform public health policy and support evidence based strategies.

Key Impacts

The potential epidemiological impact of TB screening among previously incarcerated individuals for TB in Brazil

Screening for previously incarcerated individuals could be epidemiologically impactful, likely driven by high prevalence of recent (re-)infection among this population, and the high risk of re-incarceration. Given the epidemiological potential, it is worth investigating approaches to overcome the logistical challenges of reaching this vulnerable population. Data is needed to better understand what levels of coverage are realistically achievable.
