Biography

Dr Lelia Chaisson is an infectious disease epidemiologist and Assistant Researcher in the UCSF Center for Tuberculosis at the University of California, San Francisco. Her research interests center on TB and HIV, including global epidemiology and control, prevention, and diagnostics. From 2024-2025, she served as technical consultant for the World Health Organization Global Programme on Tuberculosis and Lung Health, where she led a review on TB and pregnancy to inform the consensus process for the optimal inclusion of pregnant and lactating women in TB research.

TB treatment outcomes varied widely among pregnant women, and TB in pregnancy was associated with a high risk of adverse fetal and neonatal outcomes, including preterm birth, low birthweight, and infant mortality. Adverse outcomes were most pronounced in settings with high TB incidence.
