Key Impacts

Beyond the cost of free treatment, people with presumptive TB in Cambodia face financial hardship before TB diagnosis

The findings suggest that a significantly high proportion of TB-affected households incur catastrophic healthcare costs before a TB diagnosis was made. The National TB Program should consider strengthening and expanding the preventive activities to improve public knowledge and healthcare-seeking behavior utilizing media channels and local authorities to raise awareness and case detection efforts.

People with TB challenged with catastrophic healthcare expenses before diagnosis and during treatment in Cambodia

About one-third of TB patients faced catastrophic healthcare costs and other underlying costs. The Ministry of Health (MoH) and National TB Program (NTP) should strengthen implementation of the free treatment policy and expand the preventive efforts to improve public awareness and early case detection through community engagement and media outreach.
