Biography

Dr Karen du Preez is a clinician and senior researcher at the Desmond Tutu TB Centre, Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, Stellenbosch University. Her research focuses on epidemiological and implementation aspects of paediatric TB to allow a more effective response to the TB epidemic in children and adolescents. She is actively involved nationally and internationally to translate research into policy and practice, and she chairs the national Child, Adolescent and Maternal TB Task Team within the South African TB Think Tank.

Modelling the Covid-19 pandemic impact on the diagnosis of child and adolescent TB in South Africa

We found noticeable differences between observed and forecasted numbers of tuberculosis diagnosis across all age groups. Children and adolescents experienced the most severe and longest duration of impact, particularly infants (<1 year of age), highlighting their increased vulnerability during pandemic response periods.
