Key Impacts

Risk of immunological sensitisation to M. tuberculosis and progression to incident TB disease in a high-burden setting

Compared to individuals who were not Mtb-sensitised, those who were Mtb-sensitised had a 3-fold risk of progressing to incident TB. Because this risk is highest in recently infected (first six months) individuals, a simple and rapid-test which distinguishes recent from remote infection is needed for targeted preventive therapy.
