Biography

Hemant is a Senior Medical Scientist in the Division of Health Systems Research, ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai, India. ​Hemant is a medical doctor specializing in community medicine and operational research.
Along with the Tamil Nadu State TB Cell in India, he is leading a statewide TB death reduction initiative involving triaging for severe illness followed by appropriate care. He has led two national level evaluations of active case finding for TB in India.
He has more than 170 publications including 4 book chapters with an h-index of 29.

Districts not achieving TB death rate reduction should cross-check their reported triage coverage with true triage coverage and randomly cross-check TB SeWA triage data. Over time, this should improve triage quality, increasing the chances of adults with TB receiving appropriate care.

In the third year of TN-KET, the losses in the TB care cascade have significantly reduced and many districts have documented reduction in TB death rates. This effect needs to be confirmed through confounders adjusted individual level data analysis and is ongoing.
