Providers’ perceptions of integrating mental health care in TB services in the Free State, South Africa

Findings underscore that MHC-TB integration in the Free State is essential yet complex. Providers’ perceptions highlighted the crucial role of ‘individuals’ or ‘people’ both as barriers and facilitators in such integration. Perceived challenges included stigma and inadequate resources. Providers also stressed the need for enhanced health education for patients and families, as well as improved training for healthcare providers. MHC-TB integration requires a holistic strategy addressing contextual factors highlighted by the CFIR and strengthening all health systems building blocks – particularly the ‘people’ component. These efforts are essential for transforming MHC and improving outcomes for TB patients with co-morbid MH conditions.
