Key Impacts
Geographic distribution of most prevalent NTM disease in Brazil
It is worth highlighting some important findings such as a higher prevalence of M.kansasii in males, almost exclusively in the pulmonary form with higher cure rates. In the states with the highest prevalence, São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul presented M.avium as the most frequent species, in Rio de Janeiro the most frequently found species was M kansasii. The diversity of strains in Brazilian regions may be due to the timely access to culture and identification of mycobacterial species, and risk factors associated with each species.
