Biography
Graduated in medicine in 2004 and completed a residency in internal medicine in 2007. Worked in Mozambique with Columbia University (ICAP) on HIV programs and TB/HIV co-infection (2007-2011). Since 2011, has been involved in Brazil’s NTP, focusing on TB/HIV and DR-TB. Earned a master's in tropical medicine from UnB in 2013. Became an assistant doctor in Brasília’s public health system in 2016. In 2020, assumed the role of coordinator of Brazil’s NTP, leading the team, a position he still holds.
Key Impacts
Comprehensive epidemiological analysis of silicosis (J62) and concurrent tuberculosis (J65) in Brazil, 2006-2024
Our findings demonstrate a decreasing proportion of tuberculosis among people with silicosis over time, despite an increasing trend in isolated silicosis. Substantial underreporting and heterogeneity in diagnostic methods suggest the need for strengthening occupational epidemiological surveillance. Additionally, people-centered interventions addressing demographic disparities and high-risk occupational sectors, particularly mining, are urgently needed.

Addressing the gap: TB preventive treatment implementation in people with silicosis in Brazil
The significant disparity between the burden of silicosis and TPT implementation represents a missed opportunity for disease prevention. Our findings support the need for integrated care pathways between occupational health services and infectious disease services, with targeted interventions in municipalities with higher silicosis prevalence. Policy recommendations include shared care protocols, mandatory ILTB screening for all people with silicosis, regional training programs, and strengthening surveillance systems to reduce the deadly combination of tuberculosis and silicosis among Brazilian workers exposed to silica dust.
