Key Impacts
Poor nutrition increases the mortality risk in children treated for TB in sub-Saharan Africa
Our findings highlight the considerable impact of poor nutrition on mortality among children. The elevated mortality risk among underweight children argues for detailed nutritional screening and early nutritional support as part of routine tuberculosis care. In addition, children with malnutrition should routinely be screened for tuberculosis. Integrating nutritional interventions into tuberculosis programs could reduce mortality and improve treatment success. Further research is needed to evaluate targeted nutritional interventions for reducing tuberculosis mortality among children.
