Biography
Adrie JC Steyn, PhD is a Professor of Microbiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in Birmingham AL, USA, and seconded to the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) in Durban, South Africa. His research focuses on the spectrum of active and latent TB infected (LTBI) human TB lesions, which are obtained from surgically resected and autopsy derived tissue specimens. His laboratories employ spatial transcriptomics, multiplex immunofluorescence, metallomics, high-resolution proteomics, and micro/nano computed tomography (µ/nCT) to comprehensively characterize these lesions. He is also interested how anti-TB drugs modulate Mtbbioenergetics, the immunometabolism of Mtb infected host cells, and the role of NO, CO, O2 and H2S in TB. His long-term goal is to stablish new paradigms that enable innovative vaccine design, drug screening and advanced imaging diagnostics.
